JOB TITLE:

GUIDANCE COUNSELOR - ELEMENTARY

   

REQUIREMENTS:

 

A. Education Level:

Masters's Degree in Guidance and Counseling in Elementary Education

B. Certification/Licensure:

Nebraska Teaching Certificate

C. Experience Desired:

Minimum of three years successful teaching experience.

D. Other Requirements:

Demonstrates ability to effectively communicate with other people and to recognize their needs.

Demonstrates ability to effectively use counseling skills.

   

REPORTS TO:

Building Administrator and Executive Director of Student Services.

   

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

 
   

Basic:

To assist in providing for the needs of the students. Contacts with the students are for the purpose of dealing with student plans, choices, problems, and self-understanding. Provide adequate time for individual counseling, group counseling, parent conferences, and consulting with family, teachers, and administrators.

   

Frequent:

1. To work closely with faculty and administrators to insure our goal of serving the needs of the students.

2. To help the teachers to understand the learning and

personality dynamics of their pupils.

 

3. To help the students in understanding and working with their peer group, parents, teachers, and other school personnel.

4. To help students to develop an awareness of themselves and to gain the self-confidence needed to pursue their life's goals.

5. To accumulate, interpret, and pass on meaningful information about the student's abilities, interests, etc., if beneficial to all those involved. This can be done in written form, staffings, or by word of mouth.

6. To establish good home/school relationships, make proper referrals when students with serious emotional and behavioral problems are recognized, and work closely with community agencies whenever possible.

7. To work with resource personnel (such as ESU) to aid us in providing programs for students on drug education, value clarification, career education, etc.

8. To provide inservice programs for teachers that will increase their skills in the area of student/teacher relationships, and will meet the needs of the individual teacher.

9. To assist the Special Education Department by processing all referrals for evaluation (including re-evaluation, intellectual, achievement, or behavior), proper handling of parental permission slips, setting up all necessary staffings, and making necessary schedule changes.
